Choosing paint colours in Brisbane is easier when you test a shortlist against your home’s light and permanent finishes. A popular shade can look very different beside your floor or in a shaded room. Use a repeatable sampling process instead of searching for one universally perfect white.
Start with what will stay
List flooring, tile, stone, roof, furniture and joinery. Decide which element the paint needs to complement. Warm timber, cool-grey tile and cream cabinetry can pull a neutral colour in different directions.
Choose an interior or exterior project first. Outdoor light, shadow and the scale of a facade make exterior decisions different from choosing a bedroom wall.

Compare undertones rather than names
Whites and greys can lean yellow, pink, green or blue. Put samples beside a plain white reference and the actual floor or tile. Check wall and trim together so one does not make the other look dirty or unexpectedly cold.
Reduce the shortlist before expanding it. Compare a warm neutral and a cooler neutral beside your finishes, then refine the better direction. Keeping dozens of chips rarely makes the choice easier.
Test a large sample in several locations
- Label samples with brand and colour code.
- Use a large movable board or the manufacturer’s sampling method.
- Place it upright on more than one wall.
- Check daylight, shade and evening lighting.
- View it beside proposed trim and furnishings.
Dulux’s sampling guidance describes colour comparison tools. Digital previews are useful for direction; physical samples remain important for approval.
Include sheen in the decision
The same colour can read differently in different finishes. Gloss reflects highlights, while lower-sheen surfaces give a softer appearance. Compare suitable products rather than expecting one paint to suit ceilings, walls and doors.

Use a simple approval sheet
Record colour code, product, sheen and surface on one sheet. Include feature walls and the exact boundaries. Confirm whether a labelled sample will be retained for the project.
For exteriors, check samples beside the roof and street-facing details. On heritage-listed properties, confirm requirements before work starts.
Avoid common selection errors
- Approving from a phone image alone.
- Comparing chips only in the paint shop.
- Ignoring adjoining rooms and existing whites.
- Choosing fashion over compatibility with fixed finishes.
- Changing sheen after sample approval without rechecking appearance.
Discuss the surfaces and samples with Noble Painting’s residential painting team when requesting a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Why does paint look different at home?
Light, neighbouring colours, sheen and the painted area's size affect appearance. Test the colour where it will be used.
Can I match paint accurately from a photograph?
A photograph is a reference, but screens and camera processing change colour. Approve a physical or professionally matched sample.
